Class 4: Activities, Essays & Scholarships

This class will be yet another mix of topics. We will go over your activities list, continue our scholarship searches, and begin talking about essays.

Homework: find 3 scholarships that you are eligible for and be able to report on what you would need to do to apply for them. Revise your activities list, read a few sample college essays and come to class with ideas about what you might write about in yours.

Class 3: Random Assortment of Goodies

Class 3 is mostly focusing on making your activities list/resume, but we will also begin talking about paying for college.

Your activities list should include all of your "extra-curricular" activities: jobs, volunteer work, sports, travel, etc. It should also have approximate dates for when you participated in each activity.

HOMEWORK: Turn in to me (don't need post on the blog) your typed out activities list at the next class meeting.

Also, I encourage each of you to open a dialog with your families about options you may have for financing your education. Are you going to need to pay for college all by yourself? Do you have a college fund? Is your family planning to help out in some way, but maybe not fund the entire endeavor? How do you feel about going into debt in exchange for getting a college education? This is a topic for you and your family and does not need to be reported back to the class, but I strongly encourage you to begin thinking about it...

We will began a basic scholarship search today as well.

Reminder:
You can use this email addy for future scholarship/college related searches so that you don't get a bunch of spam in your personal inbox.

Class 2: Researching Schools

In class 2, we will be spending a majority of our time researching schools and creating our long lists based on the criteria we brainstormed last week. Take note of application deadlines too!

We will also spend a bit of time talking about playing the "college game," and what -- if you choose to play the game -- you could be doing as a high school student to strengthen your college application.

Homework: post your long list of schools (at least 10), including application deadlines, to this blog by 9am on thursday morning (1.24.08).

Class 1: Making A Long List

Some of the many things to consider:
• Where might you want to live?
• Would your career aspirations benefit from you being in a particular place?
• Would your personal aspirations benefit from you being in a particular place?
• What might you want to study?
• What types of things excite you?
• What types of jobs or careers appeal to you?

Homework:
Take the career assessment and read What can I do with a major in...? and decide what your major will be for the purposes of this class. Post your major to this blog by 9am on Wednesday (1.16.08).
